Official Turn Sequence & Timing Windows

Tournament rules mandate a strict chronological phase pipeline. Each phase governs legal play windows, priority passes, and triggered effects.

Phase Name Permitted Actions Timing Constraints & Rules
1. Draw Phase Start
Turn player draws 1 card from Main Deck (except Turn 1 of the player going first). Fast effects (Quick-Play Spells, Traps) can be activated after the draw.
2. Standby Phase Upkeep
Resolve mandatory upkeep maintenance costs and standby triggered card effects. Both players can activate Spell Speed 2+ cards before advancing.
3. Main Phase 1 Summon & Spell
Normal Summon or Set 1 monster; perform Special Summons (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Link); activate Spells and Set Traps face-down. Maximum 1 Normal Summon per turn unless granted by card effect.
4. Battle Phase Combat
Start Step → Battle Step (declare attacks) → Damage Step (calculate ATK vs ATK/DEF) → End Step. Player going first on Turn 1 cannot conduct a Battle Phase.
5. Main Phase 2 Fortify
Set additional Traps, summon monsters (if Normal Summon unused), reposition monsters from Attack to Defense. Only available if a Battle Phase was conducted this turn.
6. End Phase Cleanup
Resolve "until end of turn" effects. If hand exceeds 6 cards, discard down to 6. Turn passes cleanly to opposing player.

Live Matchplay Walkthrough & Damage Math

Board State Setup

You control 2 Level 4 monsters on field. Opponent has 1 monster in Attack Position (1800 ATK) and 4000 Life Points remaining.

1

Main Phase 1: Tribute your 2 monsters on field to Normal Summon Level 8 Blue-Eyes White Dragon (3000 ATK).

2

Enter Battle Phase: Declare attack with Blue-Eyes White Dragon against opponent's 1800 ATK monster.

3

Damage Step Calculation: 3000 ATK vs 1800 ATK. The opponent's monster is destroyed in battle.

4

LP Battle Damage: Opponent takes the difference in ATK as battle damage: 3000 - 1800 = 1200 damage. Opponent's LP drops from 4000 to 2800.

5

Main Phase 2: Set 1 Quick-Play Spell ("Called by the Grave") face-down to interrupt opponent on their upcoming turn.

6

End Phase: Conclude turn.
